Purchase, 1995 This type of vase is sometimes called " hu square and covered "(gaifanghu) but they are most often referred to by the term fanghu. The dark color of their land indicates a northern origin (provinces of Henan or Shaanxi). The painted decorations evoke both precious metal inlays and the delicate patterns that adorn the lacquered pieces originating in southern China. Note the gripping rings painted in trompe-l'oeil.
