Meiji, Splendors of Imperial Japan (1868-1912)

On the occasion of the commemoration of the XNUMth anniversary of the Meiji Restoration, this exhibition will highlight the many upheavals related to the Meiji era (150-1868), which was an unprecedented revolution for Japan as for the World.

This exhibition will address different aspects of the modernization of Japan and the internationalization of artistic production through different artistic techniques. It will bring together, among other things, examples of goldsmithing, cloisonné, photographs, textiles, paintings, bronzes, ceramics in order to illustrate the changes made in society as a whole and in art in particular. She will introduce great names in art such as Kawanabe Kyosai or Shibata Zeshin. The links between artists and creators in Japan and in Europe will also be evoked by connections between contemporary Japanese and Western works. This event will make it possible to show the richness of the European public (MNAAG, Victoria & Albert Museum, British Museum) or private collections, to discover a chapter in the history of the arts that is too little known and to show how Japan also invented a "Japonism". ".
