Among the different genres practiced by Qi Baishi, painting of flowers and birds occupies a singular place. These subjects, practiced continuously for nearly seventy years of pictorial creation, illustrate the various renewals of the artist's style. Thus in the twenties, this genre will be the place of formation of a personal style, freely inspired by Badashanren (1626-1705), of which the Magpie from the Cernuschi Museum constitutes a characteristic example.
