The Mounting and Restoration of Chinese Paintings: From Textual Sources to Contemporary Practice

Conference by Camille Schmitt, restorer of graphic and pictorial works of art from the Far East

The intervention will focus on the aesthetic aspect of the frame and some fundamental stages of the restoration technique for paintings and calligraphy mounted on rolls. Will be discussed on the one hand the oldest styles of mounts of which we still have traces and their evolution until the present period, and on the other hand, some technical elements of assembly and restoration of which we find mention in the texts of the 17th century which are still practiced in Chinese workshops.
