China in Revolution: sketches of the Maoist era

Conference tour of the exhibition.

Contrary to its reputation, the art of the Maoist period, hitherto absent from the collections of the Cernuschi Museum, showed great formal and iconographic inventiveness. Thanks to exceptional sponsorship from AXA, the museum has a large set of preparatory sketches for paintings that have become revolutionary icons. These drawings make it possible to explore the conditions under which works of art were then made, but also to penetrate the spirit of an era during which aesthetics was at the service of politics.
