The beauty of ordinary objects — the revaluation of artistic crafts in Japan
Conference at 18:00 p.m. by Ryoko Sekiguchi, writer, poet, translator.
If Japan is known today for its artisanal art, this is largely due to the movement created in the 1920s, which aimed to revalorize the work of the hands. The founder, writer and thinker Sôetsu Yanagi, with his museographic and socialist vision, traveled throughout the Archipelago, identified different know-how and founded a specialized magazine. He even opened a museum dedicated to everyday objects made by artisans, without signature.
Ryoko Sekiguchi, who edited her writings in the “Banquet” collection she directs, presents the dynamic paradigm shift wrought by Yanagi and his group, and reflects on its legacy in Japanese design today.
