Hokusai – Journey to the foot of Mount Fuji

Du Saturday October 01 2022 au Sunday January 29 2023 at the Departmental Museum of Asian Arts in Nice.

Who does not know Hokusai and his Vague ? Everyone has seen at least once in their life, in one form or another, the famous creation of the “Crazy Old Man of Painting”.

Japanese symbol par excellence, Under the wave off Kanagawa is the result of an encounter between Asia and the West. The work thus creates a link which is at the heart of the project of the departmental museum of Asian arts whose vocation is to share with its public the arts of Asia by integrating them into a global history of humanity.

Through one hundred and twenty-six prints by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) from the exceptional collection of Georges Leskowicz, the exhibition focuses on a known aspect of the master's production. The landscape, omnipresent in Japanese prints, takes on a new dimension in his work: Hokusai renews its codes from the first years of his career, then he revolutionizes the genre in the series of the 1830s to which belong the very famous Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji, the Cascades et the bridges.

La Manga and ten works complete this selection, inviting the visitor to discover the sublimated landscapes of Japan during the Edo period.
