The taste of Japan, travel and collections in the Meiji era

from thursday 4 october to sunday 13 january 2019 at St. Remi Museum, 53 rue Simon. 51100 - Reims

In 2018, the City of Reims wishes to highlight its relations with Japan, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the advent of the Meiji era, coinciding with the opening of Japan to the West, and 50 years the death of artist Léonard Foujita. The Saint-Rémi museum retains a rich collection of Japanese objects given by the entrepreneur Remois Alfred Gerard, left to make a fortune in Yokohama in the last third of 19e century. Consisting of several hundred Japanese decorative arts objects from 18e and 19e century, it has not been valued so far and will be the subject of an exhibition presenting more 250 objects from October 2018 to January 2019. This exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog highlighting the objects preserved by the museum.
