Artistic and cultural links between India and Japan (to 1890-1940)

During the Meiji period (Japan) and during the British Raj (India), a mutual interest between India and Japan developed in the intellectual circles of Kolkata (Calcutta). The trips of artists and thinkers between the two countries promote artistic interactions. A resistance to Western art is organized, of which two of the main protagonists are respectively Abanindranath Tagore and Yokoyama Taikan. Common ideals supporting indigenous traditions and reinforced by the prevailing nationalism appear in India especially under the leadership of Ananda Coomaraswamy and in Japan under that of Okakura Kakuzô. This conference intends to explore some aspects.
